NEW CINEMA NETWORK – SHAPING THE FUTURE

New-Cinema-Network.jpgThe New Cinema Network, the Roman event dedicated to supporting new independent filmmaking, will function as a veritable focus of co-productions between the 25 directors who have been invited, all currently developing their new projects, and the approximately 40 producers, distributors and financial backers worldwide who will be on hand to meet with them. For the filmmakers it is also an important occasion to find new creative stimuli and develop their projects under the best possible conditions; and therefore to lay the foundations, both economically and artistically, for the films we’ll be seeing in the not so distant future.

With NCN, the RomeFilmFest proudly joins the international network of festivals, stretching from Rotterdam, Berlin and Cannes to Hong Kong and Pusan, that supports the production of new independent films. Starting with this, its very first edition, New Cinema Network has already formed partnerships with important institutes and international organizations, from the Hong Kong Asian Film Financing Forum (HAF), to the Atelier du Festival de Cannes, to the ACE – Atelier du Cinema Euopeen, as well as most of the European institutes that promote cinema: German Films, Holland Film, FilmItalia, UniFrance, Hungary Magyar Filmunio, the Spanish Istituto do Cine – ICAA, Icelandic Film Centre, Swedish Film Institute, Swiss Films, Polish Film Institute, Austrian Film Commission, Flanders Image and Norwegian Film Institute.

The directors’ new projects have been divided into two main sections:
New International Projects, including projects by directors from all over the world, and providing the film industry the opportunity to discover and invest in important directors’ new works. Thanks to a joint collaboration with the Hong Kong Film Financing Forum, Rome will be welcoming the British screenwriter Lawrence Gray; Yu Lik-way, director of All Tomorrow’s Parties and Love will take us apart as well as director of photography for Jia Zhang-ke (Golden Lion at the 2006 Venice Film Festival); and the Chinese filmmaker Fruit Chan (Prostitute Trilogy, presented at Venice).

And by means of a collaboration with L’Atelier du Cinema de Cannes, the following directors will be seeking financing for their new films: the Thai filmmaker Apitchatpong Weerasetakul, the Georgian-born Israeli director Dover Kosashvili (Late Marriage), as well as one of the most important filmmakers in Indian cinema, Dev Bengal.

Thanks to the Unidea-UniCredit Foundation’s generous support, NCN will showcase new projects by the Angolan director Zézé Gamboa, who was awarded at Toronto and Sundance for his O Heroi; the Maroccan Nabil Ayouch, nominated for an Oscar for Alì Zaua; and the young South African Khalo Matabane, who already had a good deal of experience as a television and film director under his belt when he directed Conversation on Sunday afternoon. Other international filmmakers will present their projects as well: the Austrian Andrea Maria Dusl, who received kudos for her directing debut, Blue Moon, at the major international festivals; the Italian Stefano Pasetto (Tartarughe sul dorso); and the Turkish director Reha Erdem, also in competition at the RomeFilmFest with his latest film, Bes Vakit.

New Cinema Project Europe, which will provide 12 directors who have completed their first film with the opportunity to meet potential investors in order to put their next film together. Selection of projects for this section was made by an expert jury including the Oscar-winning producer (for No Man’s Land) Cedomir Kolar; the Oscar-winning producer (for Mare dentro) as well as international distributor Simon de Santiago, and the Italian producer Rosanna Seregni (Alla rivoluzione sulla due cavalli and Persona non grata). The filmmakers who will present their work are the Argentine-born French director Santiago Amigorena; the eclectic British screenwriter, illustrator and director Dave McKean; the German Matthias Luthardt; as well as the Spanish filmmakers Santiago Tabernero (candidate for the Goya Prizes in 2006) and Inaki Arteta (Basque documentary filmmaker who has won awards at international festivals with his previous work); the Italians Luciano Melchionna (Gas) and Giorgio Diritti (Il vento fa li suo giro). And there’s more: directors that represent worlds to discover, like Iceland’s Arni Oli Asgeirsson, Macedonia’s Sergej Stanojkovski, the Polish Anna Jadowska, the Swedish Joachim Heden and the Dutch Mark De Cloe.

Oscar-winning director Gabriele Salvatores will be NCN’s special guest in Rome and a liaison for the twelve filmmakers, to share ideas with them, discuss their career decisions, the problems with development and everything that goes into the making of a film.

In addition, the New Cinema Focus Europe will be a section designed for the filmgoing public. In a collaboration with the Tribeca Film Festival, eleven first films by the directors invited to take part in New Cinema Focus Europe will be screened at the Cinema Metropolitan.
